Naked Giants • The Shadow
Sometimes you just need a pounding beat and a shout-along chorus, and this is something Naked Giants truly excel at, throwing in plenty of inventive twists and turns to keep the whole thing from collapsing into a steaming pile of riffs.
Twisted Teens • Florida Water Blues
Jolting any number of tired old riffs wide awake, this New Orleans duo does not fear spinning the dial and faking you out on some unrelated intro before settling in to some sort of domestic swamp rock thunder that's suitable for howling along.
Two-Man Giant Squid • Two-Man Giant Squid
Angry punk disco sure is exciting, and this incongruously-named band is a master of the craft, with sizzling disco grooves and a pumping bass anchoring guitar shards and a vocal delivery that can border on the distraught. Put it on and cut a rug.
Vundabar • Surgery and Pleasure
These Boston kids with a New York attitude don't have time for your little dance on the street, you better keep your eyes on where you're going. It's all an act, because under the gritty glitter and trash talk is a heart that beats warm and true.
